You might notice it in small ways at first. Your teen is always on their phone, but somehow still restless. They seem constantly “on edge,” even when nothing is obviously wrong. They say they’re tired, but can’t seem to fully relax.
Maybe you’ve suggested things like:
“Just take a break”
“Try to relax”
“Put your phone down and rest”
But it doesn’t seem to help.
If this feels familiar, you’re not alone, and more importantly, your teen isn’t choosing this. For many teens, the difficulty relaxing is deeply connected to anxiety and how their nervous system is functioning.
Why “Just Relax” Doesn’t Work with Teens
Relaxation isn’t something we can always choose—especially when the body feels on high alert.
When a teen is experiencing anxiety or chronic stress, their nervous system can become stuck in a state of activation.
This means their body is constantly scanning for:
pressure
expectations
social stress
potential problems
Even during downtime, their system doesn’t fully switch off. So when you say “just relax,” their body may not know how.
What This Can Look Like in Teens
It doesn’t always show up as obvious anxiety.
Instead, you might notice:
difficulty sitting still or “doing nothing”
needing constant stimulation (phone, TV, gaming)
irritability or emotional ups and downs
trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
procrastination paired with overwhelm
saying they’re tired but not resting
From the outside, it can look like avoidance or screen dependence. But often, it’s a nervous system that doesn’t feel safe slowing down.
The Role of the Nervous System
The nervous system is responsible for how we respond to stress and how we return to a state of calm.
When it’s balanced, we can:
focus
rest
recover
feel present
But when it’s dysregulated (often due to anxiety, pressure, or emotional overwhelm), it can stay in a cycle of: alert → overwhelmed → shutdown → repeat
This can make relaxation feel unfamiliar—or even uncomfortable.
Why Teens Today Struggle to Switch Off
Teens today are navigating a lot:
academic pressure
social dynamics (both in person and online)
constant digital stimulation
uncertainty about the future
Their brains and bodies are processing a high volume of input with very little true downtime.
Even when they appear to be “relaxing,” their minds may still be racing.
What Actually Helps (and What Often Doesn’t)
What doesn’t usually work:
telling them to “just relax”
taking away coping tools without alternatives
assuming it’s laziness or lack of discipline
What can help:
creating small, low-pressure moments of calm
encouraging activities that regulate the body (not just distract the mind)
supporting consistent routines
validating how they’re feeling without trying to fix it immediately
Sometimes, it’s about helping the nervous system feel safe enough to slow down, not forcing it to.
When to Consider Additional Support
If your teen:
seems constantly overwhelmed or on edge
has difficulty sleeping or relaxing most nights
is withdrawing or becoming more irritable
struggles with focus, motivation, or emotional regulation
It may be helpful to explore support beyond what you can manage at home.
How Therapy Can Help Teens Learn to Relax
Therapy isn’t just about talking, it can help teens understand what’s happening in their mind and body.
With the right support, teens can learn:
how anxiety shows up for them
ways to regulate their nervous system
tools to manage overwhelm
how to build moments of calm that actually feel accessible
At LEO Psychotherapy, we work with teens and young adults both in-person in Sarnia and through virtual therapy across Ontario. We also offer evening and weekend appointments, making it easier to fit therapy into busy school and family schedules.
Supporting Your Teen Starts with Understanding
If your teen can’t seem to relax, it’s not a failure on their part—or yours. It’s often a sign that their system is overwhelmed and needs support. With the right tools and guidance, it’s possible for them to feel calmer, more regulated, and more in control of their experience.
